Clamour for two parallel bridges to Goshree Islands gets louder

Shri. Reghuram

Secretary, GIDA

Welcome to the official website of the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA).

Goshree Islands refer to the cluster of islands situated to the north of Ernakulam city.  Goshree Islands are considered to be the desert island groups in the world in terms of population.  More than 3 lakh people inhabit an area of 106 square kilometres.  Goshree region comprises of eight Gramapanchayaths mainly Mulavukad, Kadamakkudy, Elamkunnapuzha, Njarakkal, Nayarambalam, Kuzhuppally, Pallippuram & the Islands of Thanthonnithuruth and Gundu come in within the Kochi Corporation area.

In spite of being so nearly situated to the metropolitan city of Kochi Goshree was once an isolated and totally undeveloped region surrounded by water on all sides.

Goshree Bridges

In 2004, GIDA completed the construction of three Goshree bridges connecting Ernakulam and Vypin at a cost of Rs. 100 Crores.  This heralded a revolutionary chapter in the development history of Goshree Islands by providing land connecting to the 3lakh population.  These bridges laid the foundation of all the progress and development achieved by Mulavukad, Kadamakkudy & Vypin as we see today.

Drinking Water:

“Water Water Everywhere but not a drop to drink” - Thus goes the famous poetic words.  This was literally the reality in the Goshree region for decades.  In spite of being surrounded by water on all sides, people faced the misery of acute shortage of drinking water.  Through the various drinking water projects worth more than Rs., 200 crores implemented by GIDA in the eight panchayaths, the chronic water shortage suffered by the Goshree population came to an end.

By the construction of eight bridges connecting Vypin and Munambam, GIDA materialized a parallel road route from Ernakulam to Paravur via Goshree.  Thereafter, GIDA gifted a development revolution to the Goshree population through the construction of several number of roads, culverts, drains, buildings and other infrastructural facilities.

Goshree Climate Action Plan (GCAP)

Goshree region comprises entirely of islands and coastal areas and as such Goshree is geographically, ecologically and environmentally so much different from the neighbouring mainland of Ernakulam.  The natural environment here is so much fragile and therefore needs to be consciously conserved.  The Goshree region is in fact the area that is most prone to the natural calamities and hazards resulting from climate change.  GIDA has formulated a comprehensive programme named Carbon Neutral Goshree to combat and mitigate the impact of climate changes.

Carbon Neutral Goshree

Climate change us the most serious threat that the world is facing today.  Today we suffer the disastrous consequences of climate change in many forms like floods, storms, sea surge, droughts and heat waves.

The root cause that triggers climate change is Global Warming, which signifies the increase in the atmospheric and oceanic temperatures.  The primary cause of this Global Warming is the increasing concentration of Green House Gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere.  These gases act as a Green House and traps the solar heat in the atmosphere.  Since the last 150 years starting from the advent of Industrial Revolution, the average temperature of Earth has increased by 1 degree Celsius.  By 2015, Paris Convention, the countries of the world have resolved to limit this increase to 1.5 degree Celsius.

The ultimate solution is reduce Global Warming and there by combat climate change is top bring down the GHG level in the atmosphere.  It is with this objective that GIDA has formulated the Carbon Neutral Goshree   Project.  The ultimate aim of this project is to reduce carbon emission and increase carbon absorption and thereby to bring about a Net Zero Carbon state in the atmosphere.

Carbon Neutral Goshree Project mainly Focuses on five broad sectors.

• Energy

• Rejuvenation of Water bodies

• Mangrove Conservation

• Water Sanitation

• Sustainable Farming

Go Solar Project

Go Solar Project is the first component of CNG that aims to solarize all the Government and Semi-government buildings in the Goshree region.  Go Solar aims to install one megawatt solar energy production per day in the Goshree region (Estimate Amount 10 Crores).

Flow Goshree

Flow Goshree Project aims to rejuvenate the entire canals, public ponds and well within the Goshree region and thereby strengthen the ground water table and ensure free flow of water (Estimate Amount 8.5 Crores).

Mangrove Conservation

Mangroves are the natural barriers against shore erosion and also serve as an excellent nursery for fish and other sea animals.  This project aims to provide a mangrove fence along the entire Goshree shore line (Estimate Amount 1 Crore).

Water Sanitation:

This project aims to achieve 100 percent soak pit coverage and there by prevent water contamination and safeguard public health (Estimate Amount 60 lakhs).

Sustainable Farming

This project aims to encourage eco-friendly farming methods with special focus on the development of Pokkaly Rice Cultivation (Estimate Amount 1.5 Crores).

The special feature of CNG is that this is the first nature conservation project of GIDA.  Even though GIDA has implemented numerous infrastructure project, we are dedicating a comprehensive project for Mother Nature for the first time.  CNG is a project for our environment and generation to come.

We invite you to explore our initiatives and join us in our journey toward building a progressive, sustainable, and prosperous future for the Goshree Islands.
