History of Goshree Islands Development Authority
The Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA) was established by the Government of Kerala on 18 May 1994 through Government Order (MS) No. 114/94/LAD as a statutory body dedicated to the integrated development of the island regions of Kochi. The Authority was formed to address the long-standing challenges of isolation, inadequate infrastructure, and limited connectivity faced by the island communities situated in the backwaters of Kochi.
Since its inception, GIDA has played a pivotal role in transforming the region through the planning and implementation of major infrastructure, transportation, tourism, and urban development projects. With a vision to enhance connectivity and improve the quality of life of island residents, the Authority has undertaken several landmark initiatives that have strengthened links between the islands and mainland Kochi while promoting sustainable and inclusive growth.
Over the years, GIDA has evolved into a key development agency, contributing significantly to the socio-economic progress of the region. Through strategic investments in public infrastructure, recreational facilities, and tourism-oriented projects, the Authority continues to support the Government of Kerala’s vision of creating vibrant, accessible, and future-ready island communities.
